The goal of my research is to contribute to the variety of existing jazz idioms by expanding jazz languages with methods derived from twentieth century composers of “new music”. I will do this by showing how examples of these composers’ methods can be transmitted into the practices of jazz composers and improvisers. As a teacher of improvisation I am also interested in how I can offer alternatives to today’s common practices in conservatory jazz education.

Between Freedom and Fixity: Artistic Reflections on Composition and Improvisation is Ilya Ziblat Shay's practice-based research project. Four of Ziblat's compositions are discussed as musical models that integrate freedom and fixity, presenting (musically) tangible forms of the two concepts. Different approaches to notation, improvisation, performance, and electronic music are presented, and the research also draws on extra-musical notions in order to extend the direct practice-based context. By exploring the possible functions of freedom and fixity as they exist in composition this research aims to be relevant not only to musicians and scholars but also to listeners in general.
Music performance with technological instruments questions the relationship between embodied experience, situated cognition and the instrument. Key elements that constitute a present, aware and embodied music performance in an exploratory music practice are agency, intentionality and perceptual attitudes. Based on the experience as a performer on stage, a particular focus is put on the cognitive processes and types of awareness of the body in exploratory music situations.
